Goethe B2 vs telc B2: Which German Certificate Should Nurses and Job Seekers Choose?
Both certificates prove B2 German. The real question is which one fits your state authority, your goal and the way you like to sit exams.
You have reached B1, the classroom is buzzing about B2, and now everyone has an opinion: “Take Goethe, it is the gold standard”, “No, take telc, hospitals prefer it”. Before you book a slot and pay the fee, it helps to separate rumour from what the exam providers and German authorities actually publish.
This guide compares Goethe B2 vs telc B2 on format, scoring, nursing-specific versions and recognition, then helps you choose based on your own goal. We also keep our nurse-specific recognition detail in a separate guide, linked below, so this article stays focused on the choice itself.
Why Does the Choice Between Goethe and telc Matter?
For many nursing recognition files and employer requirements, B2 is the benchmark. In practice this means you will spend weeks of preparation and a real exam fee on one certificate, so choosing the wrong format or the wrong version can cost time. The good news is that you are rarely choosing between “accepted” and “rejected”. You are choosing between two accepted routes that suit different learners.
Three things should drive your decision: what your recognition authority or employer lists, how each exam is structured, and which format matches your strengths. The sections below cover all three.

How the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 Works
The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 tests four skills in four separate modules. Each module is scored out of 100 points, and you need at least 60 to pass it.
Format and scoring
- The three written modules are group exams. Reading takes 65 minutes, listening about 40 minutes and writing 75 minutes.
- Speaking is usually a pair exam of about 15 minutes, preceded by 15 minutes of preparation.
- You can take modules individually or together, and repeat them as often as the exam centre’s organisation allows.
Who it suits
Learners who are strong in some skills and weak in others often prefer the module system, because a missed module does not force a full re-sit. It also suits you if you want a general-purpose B2 that applies beyond healthcare, for example if you are still deciding between nursing, Ausbildung and other work.
How telc Deutsch B2 Works
telc Deutsch B2 is built around a written part and an oral part. According to one telc exam centre’s published format, the written part runs about two hours and twenty minutes without a break, split into reading and language elements (90 minutes), listening (20 minutes) and writing (30 minutes). The oral part is a 15 to 20 minute exam, usually in pairs, after 20 minutes of preparation.
Format and scoring
- You need at least 60% in the written part and at least 60% in the oral part.
- If you pass only one part, you can retake the failed part rather than everything, provided you do so within the credit window that applies at your centre.
- Reading and language elements (grammar and vocabulary) share one block, so strong grammar can support your reading score.
Who it suits
Learners who like a predictable structure, who are comfortable with a longer single written sitting, or who want to stay within one provider from general B2 to a healthcare exam.
Nursing-Specific Exams: Pflege Options Explained
Both providers also offer exams built around nursing situations. They are worth knowing about, but a nursing-specific certificate is not always required.
Goethe-Test PRO Pflege
The Goethe-Institut introduced Goethe-Test PRO Pflege in 2019. It targets B2, and candidates must reach B2 in all four skills to pass. Listening and reading are digital and adaptive. The test is meant for people with a recognised medical qualification, and also for those preparing for nursing training in Germany.
telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege
The telc B1·B2 Pflege exam uses everyday nursing work as its context. The written part includes listening, reading, language elements and a report-writing task, and the oral part has three speaking tasks with 20 minutes of preparation. telc states that it cannot be taken as a partial exam.
Berlin’s own nursing language exam
In June 2024, Berlin introduced its own Fachsprachenprüfung Pflege B2 based on simulated work situations. The authority said recognised B2 certificates from telc, TestDaF, ELC and the Goethe-Institut are still accepted for now, so it is an additional route rather than the only one.
What Do German Authorities Actually Accept?
Recognition is handled state by state, so the most reliable source is always the leaflet of the authority that will process your file. Here is what three of them published when we checked.
| Authority | Level asked | Certificates listed |
|---|---|---|
| Bavaria (LfP) | B2 | Goethe-Zertifikat B2 and B2 PRO Pflege, telc Deutsch B2 and B2 Pflege, ÖSD B2, and a TestDaF level equal to B2 |
| Hesse (HLfGP) | B2 | telc B2 and B2 Pflege or Beruf, Goethe-Zertifikat B2 and Goethe-Test PRO Pflege, TestDaF level 3, ÖSD B2, ECL B2 |
| Berlin | B2 | Recognised B2 certificates from telc, TestDaF, ELC and Goethe for now, plus Berlin’s own nursing language exam |
Which Certificate Should Nurses Choose?
Because the authorities above list both providers, your decision usually comes down to the following.
Choose Goethe if…
- You want module-by-module scoring and the option to repeat only a weak module.
- You are still keeping options open beyond nursing.
- An exam centre near you offers regular Goethe dates.
Choose telc if…
- You want a nursing-themed exam such as telc B1·B2 Pflege.
- You prefer one written sitting plus one oral exam.
- Your employer or institute prepares candidates specifically for telc.

Which Certificate Should Job Seekers Choose?
If you are not applying for nursing recognition, the best answer is the one your employer, training company or visa category names. Many accept either provider, but the requirement is theirs to set.
- Ausbildung applicants: check the level and certificates in the company’s job advert. Our nursing Ausbildung pathway shows how language levels fit the timeline.
- Professionals in other fields: telc also offers job-oriented exams, and Hesse’s list includes telc Deutsch B2 Beruf and telc Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2. Ask your employer whether a job-focused certificate is preferred.
- University applicants: universities often name TestDaF or DSH. Read our comparison of TestDaF vs Goethe before choosing.
Five Mistakes to Avoid When Picking a Certificate
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Booking before checking the state authority’s accepted list.
- Choosing based on forum rumours instead of official leaflets.
- Assuming a nursing-specific exam is mandatory everywhere.
- Practising with the wrong exam’s sample papers.
- Leaving too little time between the exam date and your document deadline.
✅ Better habits
- Read the authority’s leaflet and save a screenshot of the list.
- Use only official sample papers for your chosen exam.
- Ask your employer whether they prefer one provider.
- Book early, because popular dates fill up.
- Plan a retake window in case a module or part falls short.
Your Pre-Booking Checklist
- Find the language-proof leaflet of the authority or employer that will receive your certificate.
- Check whether it lists Goethe, telc or both, and whether it names a nursing-specific version.
- Compare exam dates, centres and fees in your city, including online or digital options if offered.
- Take one official sample paper of each exam and note which format feels more natural.
- Book your exam, then build a study plan around the weakest skill.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Goethe B2 or telc B2 easier?
Neither is officially easier, because both test B2 on the same European framework. Difficulty depends on you. Some learners prefer Goethe’s separate modules, while others prefer telc’s written plus oral structure. Try an official sample paper of each before deciding.
Do German authorities accept telc for nurses?
The leaflets we checked from Bavaria and Hesse list telc Deutsch B2 and telc B2 Pflege, and Berlin said it accepts recognised B2 certificates from telc and Goethe for now. Always confirm the current list for your state.
Do I have to take a nursing-specific exam?
Not necessarily. Bavaria and Hesse also list general B2 certificates. Berlin has introduced its own nursing language exam but still accepted recognised B2 certificates when it announced it. Check your target state before paying for a specialised exam.
Can I retake just one part of the exam?
With Goethe B2 you can take modules individually or combined. With telc Deutsch B2 you can retake a failed part within the credit window that applies at your centre. telc B1·B2 Pflege cannot be taken as a partial exam, according to telc.
How long is a B2 certificate valid?
The exam documents we checked do not state an expiry date. Some authorities may still care how recent a certificate is, so ask your recognition authority or employer directly.
Which certificate is better for Ausbildung or a job in Germany?
The best choice is whichever your employer or training company names. Many accept both providers, but the requirement is theirs, so check the job advert or ask HR before you book.
